COPPA Compliance
How we protect children under 13. Effective date: April 7, 2026.
Codewright is operated by R Software & Consulting LLC. We comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA, 15 U.S.C. §§6501–6506) for every user under the age of 13. This page summarizes those practices. For the complete legal document, see our Privacy Policy.
1. Parental Consent Required
Children under 13 cannot create their own account. A parent or legal guardian must sign up first, verify their identity, and invite the child via a parent-issued seat. We use KWS (Kids Web Services) to collect verifiable parental consent before any child account is activated.
2. What We Collect From Children
- Display name (no real name required — a nickname is fine).
- Age band (7–10, 11–13) — never an exact birth date.
- Lesson progress, exercise attempts, and tutor chat messages.
- Basic session metadata (timestamps, lesson IDs) needed to track learning progress.
We do not collect real names, addresses, phone numbers, photos, precise geolocation, or any contact information from children. Tutor conversations are screened in real time to block and redact any personally identifiable information the child might accidentally share.
3. What We Never Do
- No advertising to children. Ever.
- No behavioral tracking for ad targeting.
- No selling or renting of children's data.
- No sharing of children's data with third parties except service providers strictly required to operate the platform (hosting, payment processing, AI tutor inference). These providers are contractually bound to COPPA-compatible handling.
4. Safe AI Tutor
Our AI tutor ("Cody") is configured with strict safety rules for learners under 14: no discussion of violence, adult content, drugs, or personal topics; automatic PII detection on both input and output; and age-appropriate tone. Conversations are logged so parents can review them.
5. Parent Rights
A parent or guardian may at any time:
- Review all information we have collected about their child.
- Delete their child's account and all associated data.
- Withdraw consent and close the child's seat.
- Request an export of their child's learning data.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@codewright.app from the parent email on file. We respond within 7 business days.
6. Data Retention
Children's data is retained only while the account is active. When a parent closes the seat or the subscription lapses for 90 days, the child's account and all associated records (progress, tutor chats, exercise submissions) are permanently deleted.
